I was at a yogurt shop with my family and noticed this family consisting of a dad and four kids essentially grazing together. I added the pigeon in the foreground to give it balance and similarity. Maybe the bird is an extended member of the family––who knows.
This is another example of a sketch I started with absolutely no direction. As I often do, I grab the handy Rough Pencil in Clip Studio Paint and begin plotting stuff out. Usually, I'll have an idea I'll flesh out, but in this case I just started sketching shapes of a girl leaning back in forced perspective (I like to challenge myself with forced perspective for some reason, to see if I can pull it off without using reference). After I dialed in the shape, I honestly didn't know where to go from there. I seriously considered doing a tripped out illustration of Doja Cat (because the girl's face I roughed out bore a slight resemblance to her at first). As I began inking crazy patterns, I realized that no matter how wild this image would end up looking, it wouldn't come close to how creatively imaginative Doja Cat is in real life. Also, it's not like I was hired to do a drawing of Doja Cat, so no point in hurting my head on that one. Instead, I referred back to another idea of using contour lines (stripes!). I did it for another illustration with really interesting results (I'll post that illustration in the near future). I kept some of the wild ink swirls from the previous Doja pass and knocked down the opacity to about 50%, and added a cast shadow.
I knew I wanted to do an illustration of a guy taking a vape break on a fire escape. Initially, I was going to draw a horde of zombies milling around, as if to suggest now matter how inconvenient the moment, when you have to vape nothing is going to stop the urge. Zombies felt been-there-done-that. So instead I decided to go with something less obvious and more creepy. The thought of a kid in a red coat came to mind: like that horror vibe from "Don't Look Now," "The Brood," and more recent "It."
Some time ago I did a sketch of this in pen––back when I did a lot of analog doodling on paper. I scanned a bunch of these doodles and sometimes revisit them, like this one. I inked it using Clip Studio Paint, and added color with a half tone texture.
Here are just some of the character designs for a new graphic novel I'll be illustrating. My writing partner, Jarod Roe, and I are putting the finishing touches to the scripts. I should be starting the roughs for the book soon––fingers crossed. This project will be the follow-up collaboration to our previous graphic novel series, The InSpecters, which will be published by Blue Fox Comics this year.
This isn't what you think. Honestly, when I started drawing this I didn't know where I was going with it. It began with a woman's legs, then I was like, I need to put something in her hand. Of course, not being entirely original, I put a gun in her hand... now it became a femme fatale sorta thing. Well, then I thought, how about I throw in a man's hand on the floor. But, really, when I looked at it after it was all said and done I thought... MIGRAINE. Yes, migraines suck. They hurt your head, and put you out of commission--kind of like a bullet to the brain. Maybe, the girl is the pill you take to relieve the headache. If so, I imagine this guy will eventually get up and go on with his day.
This is Radio. She vibes. Music is the sonic gateway to her imagination, creating a magical world of moods, expressions, and limitless possibilities. Might explain why she ALWAYS wears headphones.
This is reflective of one of those moments when you realize your skill at doing something isn't quite at the level you imagined. Maybe take a pause, regroup, and look up at the disco ball in the sky. With regard to the art, this is done in Clip Studio Paint (I'm a HUGE fan of this software). The biggest challenge with this one was how to create the light reflections off the disco ball that we don't see. On a separate layer I dabbed (using the paintbrush tool) random splotches of light (same blue with a reduced saturation), and then used a Gaussian Blur filter (gives it that soft edge). I was pleased to see that it kinda/sorta worked at suggesting light being reflected off the disco ball and onto the roller rink floor.
